The Orthodox Synagogue

It was built in 1890 on the basis of the project by Ferencz Knapp in neo-maorical style. In 1908 another synagogue, designed by Lajos Incze was built in its yard. As the Jewish community of the city was very powerful, they also attained distinction by charitable activities, like the founding of the first organization for the protection of children, as well as the establishment of a ritual canteen for the poor, which are only a couple of the activities organized at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. On the threshold of the First World War there were 15,155 Jews in Oradea, their number amounted to 23.6 % of the city's population.
