St. Nicholas Church

Attested in documents in 1292, mentioned in the papal bull of 1399, St. Nicolas Church was built of stone from 1495 onwards with the support of the voivodes from across the mountains (Vlad the Monk, Neagoe Basarab, Michael the Brave, Petru Cercel, Prince Aron, Gheorghe Stefan and others), later winning three more service chapels.

The church has Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, its art being in fact a synthesis of all these styles under Byzantine influence. Nicolae Titulescu (1882-1941), former Romanian Minister of the Foreign Affairs, was buried here in accordance with his testamentary will. St. Nicolas Church was renewed during the inter-war period through the care of the locals and it still preserves frescos painted by the celebrated painter Misu Pop.
