The church of Sant`Andrea della Valle, Rome, June 1800. Cesare Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner, rushes into the church. His sister has hidden the key to the Attavanti family chapel at the foot of the statue of the Blessed Virgin. After some difficulty, he finds it, and hides in the chapel just as the busybody Sacristan enters.
